Founder & Artistic Director

Akia has been studying performing & visual arts since the age of Three. Born and raised in the tri-state area, where she was home-schooled by her mother. During her early years she spent most of her life traveling throughout the East Coast of the United States, The West Indies, and The Caribbean, where she was fortunate enough to study and observe many different regional & cultural art forms. Dance in its many forms was her first love, and is said to have been grooving while still in the womb. At the age of 9 Akia first began working professionally as a model in Jamaica and for visual artists in Princeton, NJ. In 1993, she was awarded a four year work-study scholarship at the New York Conservatory for the arts, in upstate NY, where she studied Musical Theatre and Dance, while performing in their repertory company. It was there that she got her first taste for directing, and choreographing. All of this led to her move to NYC in 1997, at the age of 19 to pursue her dreams of career in the arts. Since moving to NYC, she has performed, directed and emceed with improv/sketch comedy teams, appeared in numerous off & off-off Broadway productions, as a feature player in independent films, and as a touring dancer. Akia is the artistic Director and Founder of The Rising Sun Performance Company, which is now in its Fourth year of existence. She has been involved on all levels in each of their 22 and counting productions and events. In addition to RSP, she is the Director of Development for The Paul Butterfield Fund & Society, and sits on the board of directors, and Company Manager for the New York Innovative Awards, serves on their Honoree Awards committee and as an at large judge. Akia is also a writer for theatrescene.net, nytheatre.com and scene4 magazine, and is in the process of working on 3 original scripts. She resides in the Bronx with her Husband and their three cats.
