GUEST ARTISTS AND AFFILIATIONS

Established in September 2001, The Rising Sun Performance Company was created with the intent to provide tri-state area non-equity theatrical artists with a supportive network community that encourages and presents outlets for creation, growth, exploration and risk taking to diversify and expand beyond the traditional theatre audience. Based in New York City, The Rising Sun Performance Company is run by artists for artists to allow them to create their own opportunities instead of their opportunities creating them.

RSP takes pride in showcasing fresh, fledging artists alongside of fledgling professional artists in a supportive theatre community that nurtures its artists, without biased of race, sex, religion, color or creed. We focus on talent and potential, rather than resumes and credentials. While training and experience are important aspects, and are taken into consideration; RSPC encourage new artists to apply. Our mission is to give exposure and experience to today's new talent of tomorrow's great stages.

The Rising Sun Performance Company's mission is twofold. Created with the intent to provide tri-state area theatrical artists with a supportive network community that encourages and presents outlets for creation, growth, exploration and risk taking. Combining the multifaceted talents of its members culminating in collaborative lab sessions and performances of original and published works while using these performances, as well as tours, and outreach programs as a tool a diversity and expand beyond the traditional theatre audience.

THE REPERTORY COMPANY

The Repertory Program was the original and continues to be the main focus of the RSP.

RSP believes strongly that by providing new artists with training, networking and performance credits, it is directly benefiting and affecting the future of America’s dying theatre community. A Strong focus of traditional theatre values and work ethic are maintained, while allowing room for a younger generation of theatre to blend their influences into the mix.

Repertory Members are given a minimum of 2 NYC performance roles a year, have access to free and low cost workshops/training, Creative work and writing sessions, Lab Sessions, Theatre outings, Forums, website profile, networking and inclusion in a supportive community of peers. All performers must be willing to be involved in all aspects of the company, and are required to work technical positions through out the season in addition to performing. In order to maintain a place in the Repertory company all members are expected to actively participate in fund-raising for the organization, and contribute or raise $25 monthly. A minimum of a 3 month time commitment is required for repertory members, though a 6-8 month duration is preferred.

THE BLANK CHECK PROGRAM ©

Rising Sun will select one artist per year to participate in this program.

The program is set up so that Directors can select, write, or adapt any theatrical piece of their choosing. RSP will provide a budget, venue, production, cast, technical, and administrative support. The director will have complete and total artistic ownership of the project, and RSP gives free rein for exploration and creativity.

RSP closes their eyes and lets the director and cast go wild! So anything can come out of this exciting exercise in trust.

Criteria: The Director, must have directed or performed in at least two RSP productions, and have a history of affiliation with RSP of at least 8 Months. The Production Budget set forth by RSP must be adhered to.

Application Process: The artist must first submit a formal request letter, with why this would be beneficial to them, and a brief overview of their ideas for performance. Specific production details are helpful, but not required. Once the letter has been reviewed, and interview will be set up.

OUT THERE ©

OUT THERE is RSP’s outreach program.

This program is intended to be mutually beneficial to both participants of the programming. RSP does outreach by providing touring performances, free performances, classes, and workshops to areas and demographics lacking in cultural events and education. Children are a particular focus of this program.

While providing much needed theatrical entertainment and education, our repertory members are also gaining tools to assist them in the professional world of theatre, as well as learning about alternative career choices in the arts.

In the past we have worked with the NYC Parks and Recreation Department and the Four Corners Art Center.

GUEST ARTISTS AND AFFILIATIONS

RSP believes in strength in numbers, we often welcome guest writers, directors, technical personnel and performers into the mix. We participate in Costume, Prop, set piece and theatre venue sharing and swapping with other theatre companies to assist in defraying the cost of quality NYC theatre.

By doing this we are directly benefiting our members by growing their number of contacts, as well as helping to plant the seeds of continued theatre in NYC. Rising Sun has proudly been affiliated with Cry Havoc/Kitt Lavoie, Point of You Productions, Material for The Arts, The Theatre Development Fund’s Costume Collection & Play by Play, The Field, Dance Theatre Works, Circum Arts, Whole Arts, The Four Corner Arts Center, and the soon to be established Paul Butterfield Foundation.
